As you know by now, I love French filmmaking.

People ask me why.

The answer is that the beauty is in the drama of the visual.

The way French directors use light and dark,

it just speaks to me.

It's an instinctive beauty that speaks to the never-ending battle

of good and evil.

It could manifest itself externally, like a cops and robbers story, or a tense relationship.

The light could also reflect the internal battles we all face, be at the devil on your

right shoulder and the angel on the left, or the struggle for self-worth or larger meaning.

The light tells the story.

It's not the dialogue, or the characters, or even the performances. The light is the story.

It's like the umami of filmmaking, the thing that heightens the greatness of everything you feel,

the satisfaction you feel when seeing a moving image,

a motion picture, or anything that you see.

It's the light, the thing.

That's what makes French noir my favorite.
