Today's episode is something of a special treat, at least in my opinion, rather than breaking

0:07.2

down a company, going through lessons from a book or combing over memos and letters written

0:11.2

by great investors, we're going into the classroom for today's episode.

0:15.0

That is to say, while it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars to attend an Ivy League

0:18.7

school like Columbia, I'll be giving you a preview into what an education and finance at a top university looks like. Even better,

0:25.6

I'll be going off the video lectures of the legendary investor Joel Greenblatt, who has long

0:29.9

served as a professor at Columbia and has published roughly a dozen hours of his lectures on

0:34.3

YouTube. It's so rare to have the chance to literally be taught how to invest by an all-time great.

0:39.9

At best, we can usually only hope that a titan of finance will have written some letters

0:43.9

or done some interviews over the years and maybe even have written a book.

0:47.6

But to have a peek into someone like Joel Greenbott's teaching lessons is really just

0:51.0

invaluable material to investors.

0:53.0

If you're not familiar with Greenblatt,

0:54.6

you should know that not only did he have an incredible market beating track record,

0:58.4

but he relied heavily on a simple formula for success that he calls the magic formula for investing.

1:04.0

He breaks down the formula in detail in his book, The Little Book that Beats the Market,

1:07.7

which is one of the best-selling investing books of all time. Additionally, he created the Value Investors Club Forum, which is an incredible free resource for reading the research and ideas of some of the best investors around. Greenblatt actually calls it American Idol for hedge fund managers. It's not a pay-to-play kind of club, though. Instead, you have to submit an investment idea to be admitted, which gives you the chance to submit between two and six investment ideas every year. But all the ideas are available for free to anyone to read at a delay from when they're published. It's just that you have to have your pitch approved to be able to see posts in real time and to contribute new ideas directly to the forum. So much of what I've learned as an investor has come from this forum, and I really think

1:45.6

it's one of the best places for new and intermediate investors to see how the most sophisticated

1:49.6

stock pickers think through potential opportunities.

1:51.8

I'll of course link to the Value Investors Club Forum in the show notes, as well as Joel

1:57.0

Greenblatt's books.
