Summary

Years ago, most runners would finish their whole running career without ever doing a marathon or even a half marathon. It seemed that 90 percent of all runners focused on 10k's, which was the most popular rade distance in the 80's. Then 5k's became even more popular, and now half marathons continue to grow in […]

Hi, this is Debbie Boyles, coach at Mojo for Running with podcast number 55.

Should you do your first marathon?

0:08.0

Today we'll discuss whether you should do your first marathon and how to know if you're ready.

0:15.0

First, who should do a marathon?

0:18.0

I mentioned this in another podcast earlier in the summer about first-time

0:23.1

marathoners, that when people tell me they're thinking about doing a marathon, I don't encourage

0:28.1

them. Now, you're probably saying, what? Debbie does not encourage people to do marathons?

0:34.7

Let me explain. I don't discourage them either. The thing is, as you know, doing a

0:40.3

marathon is a big thing. It takes tremendous resolve and it's downright dangerous if you don't

1:18.6

and the level of commitment it takes what it requires to actually do it right enjoy it succeed

1:25.4

and come out the other side uninjjured. I don't think any runner should feel

1:32.1

like they have to do a marathon to be considered a real runner or a serious runner, not at all.

1:38.1

I just want anyone to take the time to think it over. I want it to always be their decision. Now that said, some of my

1:48.1

runners will ask me if I think they can do it or if they're ready to embark on that

1:52.5

journey. I'm happy to answer that question. And if they decide they do want to do it, then I am

1:58.5

100% behind them and I'm 100% excited for them and I'll then be
