Summary

Everybody loves a challenge, especially runners. So, I've got a doozy for you. I challenge you to do 13 half marathons in 2013. That's more than one a month, which means it's not appropriate or reasonable for new or inexperienced runners, but for experienced half marathon and marathon runners, this will be great fun. I […]

Hi, this is Debbie Boyles, coach at Mojo for Running with podcast number 42, the half marathon challenge.

0:08.6

Now I know what you're thinking. This was supposed to be the third and a series of three podcasts about running shoes.

0:15.2

Well, I haven't forgotten about that, but this message is extremely time critical.

0:19.6

So I'm interrupting my series of three podcasts before number three about shoes to get this message out.

0:26.6

And then next time I will finish with my third podcast about running shoes.

0:32.6

But it's already February, so I had to go ahead and get this message out right now. So here it is.

0:39.3

I started a challenge. I challenge you, if you are an experienced runner, someone who's been doing

0:46.2

half marathons or marathons for a while, to do 13 half marathons in 2013. That's right, 13 times 13.1 miles in 2013. And they have to be official

0:58.8

races. You don't get credit for just going out and running 13 training miles. They must be official

1:05.6

races with results posted online for anyone to see and verify. Now, if you've already done one or more races,

1:13.2

that's fine. As long as they were in 2013, you can count them. Oh, and I know you're wondering,

1:18.9

what about marathons? Well, they count as two because a marathon is a race that's double

1:24.5

the length of a half marathon. So that's perfectly fine to count that as two.

1:30.1

If you've already done a marathon or two, that's fine. You can still count them.

1:35.2

Now, I know some people are thinking, well, if I do four, five K races or five or whatever,

1:42.0

can I just add them up and use that and complete the challenge?

1:46.5

And the answer is no.

1:47.9

The whole point is to do races that are 13.1 miles long or more.

1:55.6

So it's got to be 13.1 miles in one chunk.

1:59.3

What if you're doing some sort of a challenge? I live in Tampa, Florida, where many people are training for the Gasparilla Distance Classic weekend.

2:07.6

And that particular recent weekend has four runs. On Saturday, there's a 15K followed by a 5K, and then on Sunday, there's a half marathon

2:19.8

followed by an 8K. Some people have asked me if they can add that all up and count that as two
