| 0:00.0 | Hi, this is Debbie Boyle's coach at Mojo for Running. How is your base coming along? |
| 0:07.8 | If you've been listening to my podcast for a while, you know that every runner's year is |
| 0:13.2 | normally divided up into two or three cycles that each build up to a particular goal race. |
| 0:19.2 | For example, maybe you trained for speed in the spring and that |
| 0:22.9 | culminated in a 5K race in April. And maybe you're now working towards a half marathon in October, |
| 0:29.8 | and then you'll do a marathon in February. That would represent three race cycles, and that |

| 1:03.2 | That doesn't mean no running, but it means running fewer miles, taking more rest days |
| 1:08.8 | and not running any of them hard. |
| 1:11.6 | This often overlooked stage is critical to the runner being able to stay fresh and healthy. |
| 1:19.6 | That stage should be several weeks long, not one or two either. |
| 1:23.6 | Seriously, give your body a break and it will thank you later. |
| 1:28.8 | After that, it's time to begin to implement your training plan for the next cycle. |
| 1:34.1 | And that first stage is what I want to talk about today, base building. |
| 1:38.6 | As I've discussed before, the race preparation consists of the base building phase, followed |
| 1:43.7 | by a stage of emphasis on speed |
