Summary

Methylphenidate has an FDA approved indication for ADHD. In this podcast episode, I cover the pharmacology, adverse effects, kinetics, and drug interaction.



Because methylphenidate has stimulant type effects, it can raise blood pressure and heart rate.



Weight, blood pressure, and pulse are important monitoring parameters in patients taking a stimulant type medication like methylphenidate.



There are numerous dosage forms of methylphenidate which can help accommodate many different patients' needs.

Methylphenidate is the medication of choice that I'm going to cover.

And there are lots of different formulations of methylphenidate.

There's extended release, immediate release, transdermal.

utilize different formulations for different purposes based upon patient characteristic and

factors. With methamphetate, the primary use that I see this drug used for in clinical practice

is its stimulant type effects in the management of ADHD.

Rarely, I think I have seen it for narcolepsy.

I have seen it used off-label in depression as well.
