Hi, it is Helen from the Squiggly Careers podcast and before today's episode starts, I wanted to let you know about some exciting news and how you can get involved in it early. The exciting news is our sprint is back. Hooray! We have done lots of sprints now. We have had thousands and thousands of people get involved in our five day free learning experiences and we really hope that you are going to join us for our next one in September.

But before then, we want to give you the chance to vote on the topic that we cover.

0:28.0

So we've got two options. We could do a sprint on connection. We know connection is a problem for people right now and we've got lots of practical ideas to build the relationships

0:37.8

that you need to develop a community around your career and make sure that you've got that

0:42.6

connection with people. The second topic that we could do is on progression. So we know progression

0:48.3

is important for everyone but it is not always easy and if we are going to let go of promotion

0:54.0

we have to replace that

0:55.5

with something that feels meaningful, motivating and possible. So if you want some help with your

1:01.6

progression, if you need to think about the directions you could develop in, the people that can

1:13.3

you need to go to your sprint dot vote. That's your sprint. Dot vote. You will see the two

1:20.5

options, connection, progression. You just need to let us know which one you want. And the winner will

1:25.4

be the one that we focus on in September. So we can't wait

1:28.8

to sprint with you but before then we cannot wait to see what topic feels meaningful,

1:33.2

motivating and matters most for you. So get voting and let's get on with today's episode.

Hi, my name's Sarah and in this squiggly shortcut I'm going to talk about mentoring based on sharing your strengths rather than how senior you are.

1:49.5

So often I think one of the mistakes that we make with mentoring is thinking that somebody to be a useful mentor needs to be in a more senior position than us.

1:59.2

And I think sometimes that makes it hard to make happen,

2:02.7

makes it feel intimidating. And you sort of get into that awkwardness of like, how do you ask

2:08.0

someone to be a mentor and we worry that everybody is busy? But the one thing that all of us

2:13.5

have in common is that we all have strengths and we all have strengths that we can share with each other.

2:19.4

So I think this is a more inclusive and more universal approach to mentoring that every team
