Welcome back my friends to the Epic Gardening podcast Kevin Espiritu here I'm joined by

Jordan the founder of Mind and Soil we talked a little bit about I guess his origin

0:24.2

story into the world of gardening yesterday and it had a lot to do with just

0:29.5

finding some peace and tranquility and mental health benefits in the garden Jordan and I would say I

0:36.0

definitely didn't start out this way I don't think that I really wanted to do

0:40.5

gardening simply for that reason but I have found a lot of benefits in that realm you know

0:46.3

just like a sense of tranquility a sense of peace mindfulness and so I'm curious for you where

0:50.7

that kind of was a big reason why you started what are some of these benefits that you found yeah

0:56.1

absolutely and I think there's kind of like three layers to this that we can go through the first is

1:00.8

like anecdotal the second is more like studies and scientific and then I'd say the third area would

1:06.1

be like my kind of personal philosophy around what's happening and at the like anecdotal level in

1:12.3

terms of like how I first got into gardening and what you were just alluding to there and it was

1:16.8

like a lot of fun when I was lining up this podcast and emailing with Chris and like on her bio she

1:23.4

alludes to how cathartic and peaceful she found the gardening process over the last years or last

1:29.3

year as she really started to get her hands dirty so there's kind of like this overwhelming just like

1:35.6

number of anecdotes from individuals that like I feel good when I garden so then let's go a layer

1:42.9

deeper than that and start to think through kind of like what's actually you know maybe happening

1:47.1

or are there any studies that back this and the Royal Horticultural Society over in the UK partnered

1:54.0

with a couple of universities over there to study and actually understand like does having greenery

1:59.3

in and around you on your front patio ultimately make you less stressed and so in this study that they

2:07.0

did over the course of the year at the beginning of it they measured the cortisol levels which is the

2:11.9

stressed level that an individual is you know basically experiencing and they found that only 24%
