Summary

On today’s pages, Menachot 96 and 97, we dive into the intricate organization of the showbread and the golden rods that supported them. While the technical details of arranging these rods on Shabbat might seem overwhelming, Rava teaches us a vital lesson: any labor that can be done in advance should be. Hey there, and welcome back to Take One, the podcast that brings you just one organized page of Talmud each day.

And on today's pages, Menachot 96 and 97,

0:23.3

we get a lesson in, well, how to be organized. The rabbis are talking about the shoe bread,

0:29.6

and the question soon arises. Behold, Rav Ketina interprets the verse, its dishes. These are the

0:36.4

molds in which the loaves are kneaded, baked, and placed

0:39.2

after baking. Its pans, these are the bowls for the frankincense that is placed on the table with

0:45.7

the shoe bread. Kisotav, these are the four panels of gold. Umenakiyotav, these are the rods,

0:53.1

which rest on the notches in the panels and bear the loaves

0:56.3

one on top of the other with which it shall be covered this indicates that the bread is covered by

1:02.5

the rods okay so we get this really intricate instructions on precisely how the shoe bread the

1:08.8

great big offering that is always on the table before God, has to be

1:13.4

presented. Apparently it has to be covered by these rods, fair enough.

1:17.2

Rava, however, raises an objection to this interpretation, which indicates that the rods are

1:22.4

required by Torah law. The Mishnah states neither the arranging of the rods for the new shoe bread nor their

1:28.7

removal from the arrangement of the old shoe bread overrides Shabbat. And if it enters your mind to say

1:35.7

the rods are required by Torah law, why does their arrangement not override Shabbat? I mean, a fair

1:44.0

enough question, right?

1:45.0

If we know that these loaves of bread, again, an eternal offering to Hashem, were always on

1:50.8

this table and that there were these rods that had to be removed and replaced and rearranged

1:56.3

every time we brought a new loaf of bread as offering, doesn't that stand to reason that their arrangement

2:03.2

would override the Shabbat so that we may be able to arrange them just as we were commanded?

2:09.9

Rava explains and solves the mystery.
