And I say caring because today's dove,, Menachot 73, is all about sharing.

In other words, the portion of the meal offering dedicated to the Kohanim is divided equally

among all of them, and they cannot trade it for

something else.

So if Jimmy Cohen, say, wants to say to Johnny Cohen, hey, you know, I'm not really a big

fan of unleavened crackers, and I know you dig them, so how about I'll give you my portion

of this mincha offering, and you instead will give me an

equal value of, say, sheep, next time we receive some of that, no can do. Which, you know, makes sense.

If the Kohanim were to start trading their portions, their work would become just a mess

of transactions, losing much of its specialness

and sanctity. But there is, as always, a much deeper principle at work here, one that shows us

again, again, again, that the ancient rabbis were the ultimate analysts of human psychology.

What is this principle? For that, we hop into our time

machine and leave the temple for the far more mundane realm of the modern university, circa 2014.
