Welcome to today's bonus episode of the China Compass podcast.

Today's a special day for me, I guess, or for anybody who is familiar with John G. Payton,

today is his 200th birthday. John G. Payton, the famous missionary to the cannibals of the South

Pacific, specifically to the nation that is now known as Vanuatu, used to be known as the New

Hebrides and the island in particular of Tanna is where he first lived and then eventually

moved to the island of Aniwa, which is a smaller island off the coast of Tana.

He was born 200 years ago today, May 24th, 1824 in Scotland. It's his 200th birthday today. I'm excited to do this today

and just to talk a little bit about him. I've published a book just recently, really officially,

today is the launch date trying to match it up with his 200th birthday the anniversary of his birth

and I published a book recently and been working on it for about well since late last year

that's a republishing really of his own autobiography and I'm going to talk to you a little about

that book today I might have mentioned it on previous podcast briefly I can't remember or not maybe not but I want to talk about it today and I want to mentioned it on previous podcast briefly. I can't remember or not,

maybe not, but I want to talk about it today and I want to tie it in a little bit with China as

well. So again, first of all, happy birthday, John G. Payton, 200 years ago today, you were born in

Scotland. And the book itself, the first few chapters do talk a lot about his early years

and even about his early years on the farm where he was born into a very godly family there

in Scotland. My first connection, my first exposure to the book, John G. Payton's autobiography is really what it's called, the autobiography

of John G. Payton. And it was published originally in the late 1800s. The actual events

took place in the mid-late 1800s. But I first read the book in China. I was a missionary
