1:06.0 | Reform and Control Act of 1986. The act increased border security. It penalized businesses which |
1:12.6 | knowingly hired unauthorized immigrants. And it also extended temporary legal status and |
1:17.2 | a pathway to citizenship to millions. These days it's been shorthanded to simply |
1:21.5 | Reagan signing a bill for Amnesty. But three decades later Republican President Donald |
1:26.7 | Trump was promising to build a wall between the United States and Mexico. Folks, this transition |
1:31.2 | did not happen overnight. Over time views that were once on the fringe came to have more |
1:36.0 | and more influence over the party's agenda, including at the state level. It started |
1:40.8 | with the California Republican governor who needed to win reelection. It was Pete Wilson's |
1:44.8 | Prop 187. It was designed to deny basic education and health services to undocumented |
1:51.4 | immigrants. But as I said, it was also designed to help them win reelection. At the federal |
1:56.0 | level with Republican lawmakers scuttling efforts at a Grand Bargain in President Bush's |
1:59.8 | second term. You'll see the gang of eight effort under President Obama in 2013 and 2014 |
