Now I'm Kristen Welker in Washington, where a week that has been dominated by political

dysfunction is ending with alleged political corruption.

As New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez, the Democratic chair of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations

Committee, has been indicted on felony bribery charges.

The indictment accuses Menendez and his wife Nadine and three businessmen of accepting

bribes from New Jersey businessmen in exchange for curing favors for the Egyptian government.

Here's the U.S. attorney in New York laying out the sweeping charges.

Senator Menendez allegedly provided sensitive, non-public, U.S. government information to

Egyptian officials.

And otherwise took steps to secretly aid the government of Egypt.

Senator Menendez uses power and influence to try to disrupt a criminal investigation

and prosecution undertaken by the New Jersey Attorney General's office, related to an

associate and a relative of your rebate.
