I'm Kristen Welker in Washington, where the longest shutdown in history keeps getting longer

as the pain for average Americans keeps rising.

This afternoon, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer went to the Senate floor to propose what he called a compromise, which is essentially

adding a one-year extension of the Obamacare subsidies to a clean stopgap bill that would reopen

the government. But an end to the shutdown does not appear imminent. Here's Senate

Majority Leader John Thune earlier today.

We've got to get the Democrats kind of back engaged. All I know is that the pep rally

they had at lunch yesterday evidently changed the minds. I thought we were on a track. We'd

give them everything they wanted or had asked

for and at some point I was going to say they have to take yes for an answer and they were

trending in that direction and then yesterday everything kind of the wheels came off so to speak.

We'll see what happens of the course the next couple of days,

but I would expect that we're going to be here through the weekend.

The shutdown has now lasted 38 days. Consumer confidence is plummeting. The nation's air traffic

system has been pushed to its limits and lines at food banks are getting longer. Here are

We still show up to work. We still have to serve the public. We still have to help the people

because our job is not about us. It's about helping others. And that's what we're doing.

They need to come to an

agreement to help us. We can't go another two weeks without getting paid. It's not going to cut it.
