Now I'm Kristen Wilker in Washington.

We begin today with the heartbreaking scene on the Hawaiian Island of Maui, where the

death toll from last week's devastating wildfires is now 96, making it the deadliest wildfire

in modern United States history.

And sadly, officials expect that number to rise.

As of this morning, only 3% of the affected area had been searched.

Area efforts, including those in the historic town of Lahaina, have been hampered because

local law enforcement can't safely enter the destroyed buildings.

More personnel, including FEMA in the National Guard, as well as specialist teams, are now

deployed to search through the burnt out ruins and rubble for those still unaccounted
