where we're bringing you a medieval masterclass with a historian Dan Jones.

This was first recorded as a virtual lecture program in the late summer of 2021, when Dan's book, Powers and Thrones,

a new history of the Middle Ages, had just been published. Over the course of four episodes,

I asked Dan to take on a journey through four ages of medieval history, from the collapse of the

Western Roman Empire, through to the dawning of Renaissance ideas and religious

revolution. To quickly recap what we covered in the first episode, that was from AD 410 to 750,

and we left things with Islam having basically expanded across much of the Middle East,

North Africa and Iberia.

And the period had been dominated by a lot of population movements and the world generally

wrestling with the aftershocks of the decline of the Roman Empire.
