What really angered me so much was just seeing people that are paid to represent us.

You're getting $30,000 a year, $60,000 a year, $174,000 a year to represent and serve the people in that area.

And you wouldn't show up. And if you showed up, it was for a photo-op.

My word this week is about fear and what fear does to people.

It's one of the reasons why President Trump is so intense about talking about gangs and crime on the border.

It's why the police will always defend the institution even when they kill people.

They're just clearly egregious things. They'll always defend it by reminding you of the safety of your neighborhood.

We need to be mindful of the things people are willing to believe if you get them scared enough.

And when people get scared, they're just willing to make a set of sacrifices they would never ever make any other time.

When people are scared, they're willing to let go of the things that they know to be their values.

They're willing to let go of the things they know to be the truth that they live in because the fear changes away people make calculations.

And part of our work is not to run away from the fear, but it's to make sure that we measure the fear against the outcomes.

Sometimes people use fear as a tool, not because you should be afraid, because they know they can get you to compromise your values in the presence of fear.

So we always say about fear is it's not that fear needs to go away, but that fear shouldn't be the only emotion.
