Welcome to the beat. I'm Ari Melbourne. We are tracking this breaking news. As Republicans suffer the first open speaker revolt in a century.

Republican Kevin McCarthy has begun this new Congress today with a humiliating failure. The longtime party leader in face of the House GOP lost the vote for Speaker today.

He lost 19 Republicans on that first ballot.

It's the first time any politician in any party has lost an open floor vote for Speaker since 1923.

It's rare because, of course, this is a job where the votes are typically lined up.

The person who is becoming Speaker is, above all else,

supposed to get, count, and keep votes.

Now, in the orderly process of this first day of the new house, here's what it sounded like on the floor.

That's not chaos for the whole country, of course, because this will get worked out one way or the other.

But it is certainly chaos for Mr. McCarthy's entire career, as well as the Republican Party,

trying to put a brave face on another setback.

The red wave they wanted didn't happen.

And the opening day of the Congress and the speaker that, to be fair, a majority of them

wanted, a majority within the party, also didn't happen.
