Hi everyone, it's Sophia and welcome back to Work in Progress.

Today's guest is a personal hero of mine and is almost a poster child for overcoming adversity

and the power of the human spirit.

He's a community leader, an educator, a former mayor, a Truman Scholarship recipient, essayist and more recently,

an author as well as special advisor for economic mobility and opportunity for the state of California.

I am so honored today to sit down with Michael Derrick Tubbs.

Michael has broken records and broken ground pretty much everywhere he's gone in his life,

from his start growing up in poverty in South Stockton to the national debate competition stage

in Cincinnati to Stanford University and back to Stockton once more, where he served as both the

youngest council member and the youngest mayor in the city's history.

Recently, Michael published his memoir, The Deeper the Roots, which is already receiving glowing

praise from publications and figures all over the country, including Work in Progress,

Guest, Dr. Ibermex Kendi.
