A lot of the time I know my little introductory spiel can be a little bit pessimistic

or a little bit depressing, pointing to important events in the world like the election of

Bosonaro and Brazil. Well today finally I have something upbeat and optimistic to say.

The midterm elections in the United States were a huge success.

Normally, populist governments do quite well at the polls for the first five or ten years that they are in office. That was not true for

Donald Trump and his Republican Party in the 2018 midterms. They were soundly defeated in a referendum on Donald Trump.

And there are seven really positive lessons that we can take from that and I want to run through them very quickly right now.

The first is simply to update our causal model of what is happening in the world.

For the last two years we've seen polls showing Donald Trump to be very unpopular, but we couldn't quite trust them because in 2016 they had seemingly misled us.
