Summary
#382. Matty Duncan is bound solo around Cape Horn on ICE WARRIOR, his 1987 Moody 346. He left from the UK this summer to head for Chile, the 'Wrong Way Round'. He is now undergoing repairs in Brazil, after a rigging failure offshore. His project aims to raise awareness about mental health issues by Matty telling his life story while on this solo adventure.
Emma called Matty to discuss the thousands of miles he has covered thus far. Matty talked about the rigging failure and subsequent seamanship scenario that brought him to Brazil. We also took a deep-dive into Matty's life story and the mental health struggles that inspired this journey. There are mentions of suicide and other sensitive topics in this episode. Matty is now readying ICE WARRIOR for the next big passage, from Brazil to Chile via Cape Horn.

| 0:00.0 | The easiest way to say it is a sailing podcast, so I don't really have to be able to untechnical. |
| 0:06.2 | Both starboard shrouds went. |
| 0:10.5 | And we were about 10 degrees south, about 400 miles east of Brazil. |
| 0:17.8 | And yeah, just popping along, you know, a nice six knots full sail and I was sat down below |
| 0:27.1 | and you just hear that dreaded noise followed by that very unfamiliar movement. |
| 0:33.7 | Hey just a couple notes before we dive into the episode. The first half hour or so is pretty deeply about sailing and Maddie's solo sailing journey across the Atlantic this far, including a pretty interesting rigging failure story. But then after that, we get pretty deeply into mental health. And I just wanted to let everyone know that there are a handful of mentions about suicide and some pretty intense topics. |
| 1:02.1 | So just a heads up. |
| 1:04.8 | A couple 59 North related things. |
| 1:08.3 | As we wind down this on the wind season, we are ramping up to launching |
| 1:14.0 | Falcon, our new FAR-65, which is super exciting. I'll be going to the UK in January with a lot of our |
| 1:21.0 | team members to test sail the boat. And our first passage is in February, and there's still one |
| 1:26.3 | spot open on that. |
| 1:28.0 | We also have two spots open on our Greenland Transatlantic on Falcon, |
| 1:33.0 | and there, I think, are still a couple bunks on East Bjorn for next year as well. |
| 1:37.5 | So go to 59-north.com slash bunks to check those out. |
| 1:42.5 | We have also just opened up applications for apprentices |
| 1:46.0 | at 59 North. So if you go to 59-north.com slash apprentice ships with an S on the end, |
| 1:55.4 | you can read more about this and fill out an application if you're interested. But basically, |
| 2:04.9 | we have been unofficially doing this for a long time. |
| 2:08.4 | It's how I started sailing offshore with 59 North. |
| 2:14.0 | But we're looking for some folks who are really excited about offshore sailing and feel that they can contribute significantly to a 59 North Passage in exchange for their bunk. |
| 2:20.3 | We won't do this on every trip. We are taking applications on a rolling basis, so don't panic and feel like you have to do it today. |
