Hello, my friends, and welcome back to Unchaken. I'm Jared Halverson,

and today we are on our second installment of the Atonement Trilogy.

Last week was Gethsemane, this week is Calvary, and next week is the Garden Tomb,

and so to go from Atonement to Crucifixion to Resurrection,

like I said last week, all of those fall under the broad umbrella of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

And two out of three isn't good enough, and one out of three certainly isn't sufficient.

We have to be able to understand and embrace all three aspects of this.

And today's is probably the hardest, especially for Latter-day Saints to wrap their hearts around.

Because today is, today's hard. Today is painful, physical, spiritual.

The suffering that we'll have to study today is intense.

The word excruciating literally means out of the cross.

Can you hear cross in the middle of that term excruciating?

I'm going to do my best to avoid being too graphic, but in some ways there's no way to get around

the agonizing ordeal that Jesus is going to experience in what we study today.

Now, perhaps it's because of that graphic mess, because of the visceral pain that is being portrayed here

that makes us shy away from today's topic.

And we rush back to the shadows of Gethsemane to spend the bulk of our time and attention there.
