After more than two years of darkened and then sparsely populated movie theaters,

ticket sales are finally ticking up again, and these days it's not just people heading back to

the movies, toy companies are going there too. Mattel is betting big on movies and TV with more

than a dozen projects in various stages of production. The company's Barbie-based film is being

released next year in conjunction with the iconic doll's 60th anniversary. But don't expect an airy

piece of fluff here. The movie stars A-lister's Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Greta Gerwig,

the Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind Little Women and Lady Bird, is the director.

And while there aren't many details surrounding the film or storyline, Yahoo News reports that there will be different versions of Barbie portrayed by Issa Rae and Hari Neff, who will each be matched with their own cans.

Mattel's CEO Enon Kreitz told CNBC, he has big expectations for the movie, quote,

Barbie is a cultural icon, a pop icon, and this movie's really shaping up to be what we believe

...
