Welcome back everyone. Hope you're doing well. This is the Epic Gardening podcast. My name is Kevin

0:18.2

Espiritu. I'm joined by Matthew Reese Warren, a gardener and an author. His book is called The

0:24.1

Ecological Gardener, which is out right now. You can grab it in the podcast description. I'll

0:28.4

leave a link for you. Matt, we've actually talked about quite a few things in the world of coming

0:34.1

at the garden from a more ecology-focused point of view. One piece of that, which is massive,

0:40.3

it's a huge piece of it, is the way that you're repurposing the organic matter that's streaming both

0:45.4

out of your home and also out of your garden. I think everyone has their own twist or their own

0:51.1

nuance to composting, so I'm curious how your setup looks. Yeah, I think that's one of the great

0:58.5

success stories of gardening. I think composting because I feel like everyone knows that it's

1:04.3

worth a shot. Maybe because it's just so obvious. The fact that you can turn all of your waste into

1:10.8

the food or amendment for next year is pretty sort of full-heartedly to not do it. So everybody has

1:20.2

a go and I love that. But I do think that there's certain elements in which you can do composting

1:26.9

really well or you can just let it be. When I was growing up, my dad always just used to have a

1:35.6

pile at the end of the garden that he covered with a piece of carpet and just be left there,

1:41.0

really. I think there's nothing particularly wrong with that, if you're going to leave it for a

1:45.8

few years because it takes a long time for the microorganisms to get in there and to digest

1:52.1

everything and if you do it too quickly, if you do that method, then you're just going to have

1:57.0

compost that's going to explode come spring with weeds. So if you try and seed into that,

2:05.1

I mean with your carrots or beetroots, you've got no chance. So it does need to be some sort of

2:12.3

development to it. And I like the analogy of sort of, you know, it's a bit like shuffling,

2:15.8

you know, you really got to be at the pot. And I really become much more dynamic with my composting

2:22.8

over the years and I really move it. I have some systems where it's about keeping it kind of blocked
