Summary

Gaetz has been under investigation for allegations of sexual misconduct, illegal drug use and accepting improper gifts. The choice of Gaetz for attorney general stunned senators and even some of Trump’s own advisors and set up a test of loyalty for a Republican Senate that might be loath to confirm Gaetz.

Host Elahe Izadi speaks with congressional reporter Marianna Sotomayor about why Trump would choose Gaetz – and why the former congressman is so controversial, even within his own party.

Today’s episode was produced by Laura Benshoff, with help from Ariel Plotnick and Emma Talkoff. It was mixed by Rennie Svirnovskiy and edited by Monica Campbell with help from Maggie Penman and Reena Flores. Thanks to Emily Rauhala.

So Mariana, we are talking Thursday morning and President-elect Donald Trump is picking people to serve in his administration.

0:10.7

And late yesterday, he made this one pick that caught a lot of people off guard.

0:15.6

And that is Matt Gates as Attorney General. Gates is now a former Republican congressman from Florida,

0:22.4

and the Attorney General oversees the Department of Justice.

So, Mariana, how did this pick land on Capitol Hill?

0:29.9

meeting off campus as they themselves were debating their own leadership team. And some members

0:47.8

that I talked to said that people legitimately just gasped in the room. Mariana Sotomayor covers Congress for the Post.

0:56.7

She says Gates is a divisive Republican who has stymied a lot of legislation. He's a staunch

1:02.9

Trump ally. And he's repeatedly attacked the FBI, which is under the DOJ. Here he is at a July

1:10.6

2023 hearing with FBI director Christopher

1:14.0

Ray. Don't you see that that's kind of the thing, Director Ray, that you preside over the FBI

1:19.4

that has the lowest level of trust in the FBI's history. People trusted the FBI more when

1:25.7

Jay Edgar Hoover was running the place than when you are.

1:28.2

And the reason is because you don't give straight answers.

1:30.8

Gates has also been accused of sexual misconduct.

1:33.9

He was investigated by the Justice Department.

1:36.6

Gates has denied any wrongdoing.

1:38.7

So many House Republicans absolutely loathe Matt Gates. He has constantly been a thorn on leadership side,

1:49.5

on many of the member sides, that he is just someone who has never really been liked,

1:55.4

except for a very select few members of the MAGA crew that he hangs out with in the House.
