| 0:46.0 | Now, if you had to guess, how many babies would you say are born every day? I'll give you a second. |
| 0:52.8 | Now, I cheated, I looked it up and UNICEF estimates that an average of, |
| 0:58.0 | wait for it, 353,000 babies are born each day around the world. Isn't that incredible? It's more than |
| 1:07.6 | four births every second. And most of those, they're safe for both the mother and the baby. |
| 1:14.6 | But many of those births are not. |
| 1:17.6 | In fact, nearly 830 women die every day due to complications during pregnancy and childbirth. |
| 1:26.6 | Now, most of these deaths can be prevented through skilled care at childbirth and just having |
| 1:33.7 | access to emergency obstetric care. |
| 1:36.4 | But in sub-Saharan Africa, where maternal mortality ratios are the highest, fewer than half |
| 1:42.7 | of women are attended to by a trained midwife or a nurse |
| 1:46.3 | or a doctor during childbirth. So you can probably guess that maternal deaths mirror the gap |
| 1:53.3 | between the rich and the poor. Less than 1% of maternal deaths happen in wealthy countries, |
| 1:59.6 | but I wonder if you knew that America has |
| 2:02.7 | the highest maternal mortality rate of all industrial countries, |
| 2:07.3 | in fact, by several times over. |
