As time passed and investigators retired from their respective departments, the cold case ultimately

0:05.9

landed back at the Dunn County Sheriff's Office. Investigator Dan Westland started looking at the

0:11.8

Mary Schley's case in late 2020. He reviewed the case file and saw that a partial DNA profile had

0:17.9

been obtained from the hat scrapings and had been uploaded to codis,

0:21.3

with no suspects being identified. In July 2021, Detective Westland started working with Bodey technologies

0:28.3

in attempts to extract suspect DNA from additional items of physical evidence. On July 21st,

0:34.9

he packaged and mailed four rootless hairs obtained from the suspect's stocking

0:39.4

cap to Bodie. Bodie was able to obtain a partial DNA profile from one of the hairs, but

0:45.0

that didn't provide any more genetic information than the partial profile already encodice.

So on the recommendation of his connections at Ramapo College,

0:59.6

Investigator Westland started to work with Intermountain Forensics on obtaining a SNIP profile for this case.

1:05.6

He sent to the lab one of the first in the world accredited for whole genome sequencing for IgG,

various pieces of evidence, including the extracts used to obtain the original STR DNA profile from the suspect's hat years earlier. In these extracts, there was ample DNA to work with, and in late

August 23, Intermountain forensics reported that they were able to obtain a SNIP profile

1:24.8

from the extracts. The SNIP profile showed that the suspect's

1:28.9

admixture had significant northern European ancestry, notably Swedish and Scandinavian. Remember,

1:35.6

the hairs on the hat were blonde, consistent with this heritage. Then investigator Westland

1:41.2

turned to Karen Binder and her team of student genealogists at Ramabow College of New Jersey.

1:46.4

You've heard me talk about Ramaphos' investigative genetic genealogy center and their IGG certificate program in many episodes.

1:53.5

The team agreed to tackle the case and uploaded the SNIP profile to Jedmatch and Family Tree DNA.

1:59.6

The top match, a woman, shared 534 centumorgans of DNA with the suspect, consistent with

2:06.2

a relationship somewhere between a first and second cousin to the suspect.
