I have this fantastic icon.

Actually a very ancient icon with John holding his own head on a platter. I especially love to bring it out on this

day and display it in our kitchen. My wife, she doesn't like it so much, but it's become kind of a tradition.

Now, John the Baptist suffered and was put to death by King Herod for being faithful to the truth about marriage and family.

In Matthew Chapter 11, when John was suffering in prison, he sent his disciples to

Jesus to ask him, are you the one who is to come or should we look for another?

Now many fathers and doctors of the church think John sent his disciples to Jesus not because he doubted but because they doubted.

After all, our own suffering, and especially that of a loved one,
