The public, which is used now to a flat digital world where you can get the date, you can get a car, you can get anything you want, a house, literally the speed of light by clicking a computer suddenly is confronted with government and media that

is distant far away slow moving and never listens.

And now the good fight with Yasha Monk.

The 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall past just a couple of days ago.

And I've been thinking back on my own memories of the fall of a wall and what they might mean today.

I have a vivid memory of watching the fall of a bull on wall live on television when I would have been seven years old.

I see myself in this big spacious living room following along the events and having some very

childlike understanding that people who had been terribly oppressed, who had been unfree, would now be able to live in liberty.

But there's one problem with that memory, that big spacious living

room that I'm picturing in my mind belongs to a house in which I and my family did not live until two or three years after the fall of a war.

I must have seen all of this on a documentary when I was 9 or 10 and misremembered it as seeing it live. What's interesting about this memory is that I think

more broadly we have a forced memory of what 1989 was about.

As the wonderful political scientist Ivan Krasstev,

who have had on a previous episode of a good fight,

has argued, we assumed that 1989 was a liberal democratic revolution, that everybody was united not just in

disliking the communist regime but in wanting liberal democracy.
