🗺️ Martin De Porres - Episode Three: Compassion Above Everything

Lima, Peru. 1603. Eight years have passed since Martin was accepted as a servant in the Dominican monastery of Lima. While he finds joy in serving both the friars and the poor, whispers of discontent echo through the cloisters. Though many of the friars mistreat Martin, the wise and compassionate Father Prior rejects their prejudice, recognizing that Martin carries a flame that could illuminate the most benighted corners of men’s hearts.

Martin de Porres’s story teaches lessons of faith, justice, and mercy. Martin’s natural compassion leads him to caring especially for animals, from feeding a stray dog as a child to miraculously convincing an infestation of rats to leave the priory. Martin’s sacrificial spirit makes him willing to sacrifice himself for the sake of his brothers. Martin’s life demonstrates how we are called to exercise true charity in a broken world.
This series contains moments of danger and intensity, including raised voices. It portrays some characters’ racial animus and discrimination on the basis of race. Martin’s father, a prominent diplomat, refuses to acknowledge his mixed-race children or marry their mother. Martin is separated from his mother. Martin is verbally abused because of his heritage. Martin is initially refused entry to the monastery, but he perseveres. Martin offers to sell himself into slavery to pay off the monastery’s debts.
