cure their fear of spiders.

0:16.7

Let's satisfy some curiosity.

0:20.0

When NASA chose Jeziro Crater as the landing site for the Perseverance rover, they did it for a good reason.

0:26.0

Scientists had seen hints that this dusty canyon was once a massive lake.

0:31.0

And where there was water, there may have been life.

0:34.0

Perseverance has been taking pictures of its surroundings since it landed in February,

0:38.0

and scientists think that these pictures show conclusive evidence that Jezirocrator was indeed a huge body of water, and one

0:46.2

with a pretty dramatic past.

0:49.2

Here's why scientists thought Jezirocrator might have been a lake.

0:53.0

Running water, like in the flow of a river, carries silt along for the ride.

0:58.0

When a river meets a lake, all that silt builds up into layers of sediment in a distinctive fan shape.

1:04.4

Scientists recognize this fan shape in parts of the Jeziro crater from images captured

1:08.6

in orbit around the planet.

1:10.8

So, perseverance went to investigate.

1:14.0

The new images from Perseverance showed details of the sediment.

1:17.0

Because of the layering and the slope of the outcroppings,

1:20.0

scientists concluded that they were formed by flowing water rather than wind or another geological process.
