Summary

On the Spoiler Special podcast, Slate critics discuss movies, the occasional TV show, and, once in a blue moon, another podcast, in full spoiler-filled detail. This week, Dana Stevens and Sam Adams discuss Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story. Charlie and Nicole have decided to end their marriage. Now they need to figure out how to get a divorce. Can they keep the proceedings civil or will it escalate to a fraught situation as divorce lawyers pit them against each other? Will Charlie have to uproot his life to maintain custody? What will happen to the kid? At the end of the divorce, will they even be able to remember why they fell in love in the first place?

0:51.2	Today, we are talking about Noah Bombach's marriage story, which opened a couple months ago in theaters and is just about to drop on Netflix this week. And joining me in Slate's Brooklyn office to talk about marriage story is Samuel Adams, senior editor at Slate and Culture Writer, film critic extraordinaire. Hey, Sam.

0:55.0	So I'm feeling both very buzzed to talk about this movie and also a little bit panicked because we both saw it quite a while ago. I have very strong feelings and things to say about this movie, but I may be wandering through the thicket as far as the plot. Yeah, I'm a bit of a plot sieve, which makes, I don't know, makes me an odd person for these spoiler specials, but I enjoy them and y'all seem to listen, so thanks.
1:14.1	I mean, this is not a movie that's really about plot anyway. So, and it is a movie that's all about currents of feeling and about character, really, about two extraordinary performances, I would say, which we'll get to. So maybe we will approach it more in terms of themes and characters than going through the story bit by bit, since we all know from essentially
1:28.5	the trailer, which we're just about to hear a bit of, that this is a story about a couple
1:31.9	in the midst of a messy divorce.
1:35.0	What I love about Nicole, she is a mother who plays, really plays.

1:43.4	He loves all the things you're supposed to hate like waking up at night. She knows when to push me and when to leave me along. He never lets other people keep him from what he wants to do. Guys, you're too far. I know. It's not easy for her to close a cabinet. He's incredibly neat. She's brave. He's brilliant. He's very competitive.
