Summary

In October 2008, filmmaker, aspiring screenwriter, and wannabe serial killer, Mark Twitchell, pretended to be a woman on an online dating website and lured Johnny Altinger to a rented garage under the pretense of a romantic encounter. Instead, Twitchell ambushed Altinger and murdered him in a brutal manner. Twitchell then wrote a document called “SK Confessions” which detailed his thoughts, plans, and actions related to the murder of Altinger, as well as the attempted murder of Gilles Tetreault. In this episode, retired FBI profilers Julia Cowley, Angela Sercer, and Bob Drew analyze “SK Confessions” and discuss what they believe it reveals about Twitchell’s true motives. Music by John Hanske. You can listen to John’s music on Spotify. Excerpts from “SK Confessions” were read by voice actor Aiden Cass. Today we're going to be discussing the Mark Twitchell case, which was a very high-profile case from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

And the main reason this case garnered so much attention was because Twitchell seemed to be obsessed with the TV show Dexter.

And the true crime show 48 hours has covered this case.

And I appeared on one of the episodes and was interviewed about some of Mark

Twitchell's writings in which he described his crimes in detail. So I thought it would be

1:03.8

interesting to cover these writings in greater depth because there was a lot we couldn't go into. Even on 48 hours,

1:12.9

it was just too graphic to get into the details of some of Mark Twitchell's writings.

1:21.4

Before we get into the analysis, though, I'll give some background. Twitchell was a filmmaker and aspiring screenwriter from Edmonton,

who became known as the Dexter Killer because of his perceived interest in the popular TV show

1:37.2

and a fixation on the main character, Dexter Morgan. And in the TV show, Dexter Morgan was a serial killer and blood spatter expert who

1:49.1

worked in a crime lab and processed crime scenes. And at a young age, Dexter's adoptive father

1:56.7

recognizes Dexter's serial killer tendencies and helps him kind of hone his skills to prevent him from ever getting caught.

2:06.9

And in the show, Dexter follows a code that his father instilled in him.

2:12.7

And he only kills criminals who are really bad, who have escaped justice.

2:20.1

Those who deserve to be killed, that is.

2:22.6

And Mark Twitchell did not have this same code.

2:25.5

As he targeted, you know, good, innocent people, people living productive lives, the only real similarity to Dexter was Twitchell's creation of what he called a

kill room, which was a rented garage that he lined with plastic in order to make for easier

cleanup. And for those who have seen the show, you know that Dexter had a ritual of setting up and
