Welcome to Off Message. I'm Isaac Dober. Today's guest, Captain Mark Kelly. You may know from space,

but you probably know as the husband of former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and the leader of

Americans for Responsible Solutions. Kelly happened to be in Washington when the news of the Las Vegas shooting broke.

He was here to campaign in Virginia for Ralph Northam, the Democratic candidate for governor.

And instead of doing that event, he and Giffords showed up at the Capitol on Monday

morning and talked about what they want to see happen. But as is the case with every one of

these mass shootings, it's not really clear what will happen. I had the opportunity to sit down

with Kelly at the end of what was a very long week for him

talking about this issue, thinking about this issue in the wake of Vegas,

and seeing movement in Congress on Bumpstock,

which he thinks actually starts taking apart the argument that people who are opposed to new gun safety laws have,

which is, he says, well, if you're passing a law for something,

then it makes sense that you would think that a law could matter for more things when it comes to guns.

Then, he's an astronaut. We got into the question of
