Canada's next government will be a liberal government.

It is not yet clear at this hour.

That's the Canadian National Broadcaster CBC announcing the results from Monday's general election,

a fourth consecutive term for the Liberal Party, now led by Prime Minister Mark Carney,

following Justin Trudeau's resignation earlier this year. But it is not yet clear whether they'll command a majority in Parliament.

Nevertheless, it is a remarkable turnaround for a party that had been training by 15 to 20 points behind the Conservative opposition.

Until that is Donald Trump returned to the White House, launched his trade war,

and began threatening to turn Canada into America's 51st state.

A fact acknowledged by Mark Carney speaking last night when it became clear he would remain as Prime Minister.

We are once again at one of those hinge moments of history.

Our old relationship with the United States, a relationship

based on steadily increasing integration, is over. The system of open global trade anchored

by the United States, a system that Canada has relied on since the Second World War, a system that, well,

not perfect, has helped deliver prosperity for a country for decades, is over. These are tragedies,

but it's also our new reality. We are over, we are over the shock of the American betrayal, but we should never

forget the lessons. But you are going to take this forward. We have to look out for ourselves,

and above all, we have to take care of each other.

And here's the Conservative Party leader Pierre Pallév, admitting defeat to supporters at his party headquarters last night. Canadians have opted for a razor-thin minority government, a virtual tie in the vote count.

So I would like to congratulate Prime Minister Carney on leading this minority government.
