| 0:00.0 | The Bible Study Podcast, episode 594. Today, the Bible Study podcast continues the study of the |
| 0:06.5 | book of Mark with Chapter 6. |
| 0:16.8 | Welcome to the Bible Study podcast. I'm your host, Chris Christensen. We're going to start |
| 0:21.1 | chapter six today. It is a long chapter, so I'm not sure that we're going to finish it today. |
| 0:26.9 | It starts with this story, a prophet without honor. Jesus left there and went to his hometown, |
| 0:34.2 | accompanied by his disciples. When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the |
| 0:38.4 | synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. Where did this man get these things? They asked. |
| 0:43.9 | What's this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? |
| 0:49.8 | Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son? And the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon, aren't his sisters here with us? And they took offense at him. Jesus said to them, a prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives, and in his own home. He could not do any miracles there except lay his hands on a few sick people |
| 1:13.1 | and heal them. He was amazed at their lack of faith. A couple of interesting things about this. |
| 1:19.9 | First of all, I like the he couldn't do any miracles except heal a few sick people. And I'm thinking |
| 1:24.8 | that if that happened in the service that I'm in, we wouldn't say, |
| 1:29.6 | oh, gee, the pastor could only heal a few sick of people by laying hands on them. But, oh, my Lord, |
| 1:35.7 | what an amazing miracle the pastor would lay his hands on sick people and heal them. But again, |
| 1:41.1 | we have to put this in the context of what Jesus has been doing elsewhere. |
| 1:45.8 | And compared to the miracles that he's been doing in Copernum in the nearby towns, this is not as much. |
| 1:53.0 | And it apparently is because of their lack of faith. |
| 1:56.9 | And the problem here is that they think they know Jesus. |
| 2:00.9 | This is the problem we saw with his family is they say, we know this guy, isn't he a carpenter? |
| 2:07.0 | And there aren't actually that many places in Scripture where we know that Jesus was a carpenter before he did this other work. |
| 2:15.2 | And I don't think there's any place where it says that Joseph was a carpenter, |
| 2:19.2 | but we infer it from this, that he is in his father's business, |
