Brothers and sisters, the purpose of our gathering here this weekend is to fix the eyes of our hearts on the Blessed Virgin Mary,

0:09.0

to linger with her, to ponder her, to ponder her many attributes and activities, and to study them with care.

0:18.0

The point of our study is not simply to understand the Virgin,

0:21.6

theologically, but to love her, all the more. The point, indeed, is to abandon

0:28.6

ourselves to her, in all devotion. Her role in our lives is immense. Her whole being

0:36.6

Queen of peace, pray for us. The litanies of the Western Church can go on for a long time, but they're rather short in comparison to the acathist hymns that we find to the Theotokos in the eastern side of the church.

1:55.0

The most common acathist hymn to Our Lady calls her the assurance of those who pray in silence, the door of solemn mystery,

2:05.1

the receptacle of the wisdom of God, the ark gilded by the spirit, the leader of mental

2:13.1

formation, and the one who weds the faithful to the Lord, just to give a few.

2:20.3

Litanies and acathist hymns have as their purpose not only to render due honor to our lady

2:26.3

and to invoke her intercession, but also to initiate the Christian people into her mystery.

2:33.3

To educate us in the truth of who Mary is,

2:37.5

who Mary is for God and who Mary is for us.

2:41.6

Every one of her names, titles, or activities listed in such prayers

2:47.3

points to a property of the woman herself, her person, her nature, her grace, her
