Maria Montessori changed the way people thought about school.

Maria was born on August 31, 1870, in a small town called Chiaraval in Italy.

Her family moved to Rome when she was young, and growing up in the busy capital city

gave her more chances to learn and explore. Even as a child, Maria was curious

and confident. She loved math and science, which was unusual for girls at that time. Many people

believe that girls should only learn about cooking, sewing, and taking care of a home, but Maria

wanted more. She worked hard in school and didn't

let others tell her what she could or couldn't do. As she got older, Maria decided she wanted

to become a doctor. That was almost unheard of for a woman in the late 1800s. People told her

it wasn't possible, but she didn't give up. After years of studying and pushing through many obstacles, she became one of the first female doctors in Italy.

She was strong, determined, and believed that if you had a dream, you should follow it, even if others didn't believe in you yet.
