In the closing days of the presidential campaign, Kamla Harris stepped up her

attack on the grave dangers to democracy that a second term for Donald Trump presents.

As if on cue, Trump himself bolstered Harris's case

with an alarming uptick in divisive rhetoric,

laced with promises of authoritarian and despotic rule.

Yet once again these dramatic contrasts produce no apparent movement

in a electorate that seems preserved in amber.

Final polls of the contest put both Harris and Trump at 48% of the popular vote.

For Harris supporters the ongoing of the out of reach, polls still show both candidates neck and neck and if anything Harris inching forward over the weekend, but rather because it reflects a seeming

indifference from nearly half the country to what Harris voters see as the urgent

prospect that a second Trump presidency could demolish constitutional norms and the rule of law.
