It was 1953, and gossip flowed freely among the ex-cons and criminals of Los Angeles,

leading many eyes to turn to one woman in particular,

Mabel Monaghan. Mabel, a once vivacious Vodaville star, was now a reclusive shut-in, residing in a

Burbank home. Mabel was used to living in hotels, but when her daughter, Iris, divorced her wealthy entrepreneur husband,

Tudor Scherer, she left her mother the house she had acquired through the split.

Mabel remained close with her former son-in-law, and Tudor frequently visited her in the house

during his trips to Los Angeles. But that amicable friendship sparked rumors that Tudor, who had ties to the mob, was secretly

storing thousands of dollars inside a safe in Mabel's home.

And four thugs, Baxter Shorter, Emmett Perkins, Jack Santo, and John True, wanted the alluring

fortune for themselves.
