Hello and welcome to today's independent travel podcast with me, Simon Calder.

It's Monday the 25th of March, which makes it only nine months till Christmas Day.

But that's not important right now, because I want to talk about an impending cosmological miracle.

Two weeks from now, on the 8th of April April 24, a total solar eclipse is going to sweep

across North America. It will provide the most magnificent astronomical experience.

Hardly anybody when you look at humanity as a whole has ever witnessed a total eclipse. But on that

magic Monday, tens of millions of people will be able to do so because the zone or path

of totality is going to sweep from the Pacific to the Atlantic during the course of the day.

Here's why eclipses happen. It just so miraculously

happens to be the case that the moon is one four hundredth of the size of the sun. It's also

400 times closer to the Earth than the Sun is.
