Summary
In West Ealing, I met Mark Hopwood, GWR's managing director, to discuss an innovative battery-powered train trial aiming to transform branch lines and boost environmental sustainability. We also navigated GWR's challenges, the M25 closure's impact, and strategies to attract more passengers in a changing travel landscape.

| 0:00.0 | Hello and welcome to today's independent travel podcast with me Simon Calder. |
| 0:08.8 | It's Friday the 15th of March and as you may have heard I'm at a railway station. |
| 0:14.3 | West Ealing actually west of London, about five miles or so from London, Paddington. |
| 0:20.0 | And I'm with Mark Hotwood. He is the managing |
| 0:22.9 | director of Great Western Railway. And Mark, we're here for really quite a significant event. |
| 0:30.2 | Can you tell us what's happening? Yeah, it's an exciting day for us at Great Western Railway. Here at |
| 0:34.5 | West Ealing, we have our branch line that runs to Greenford. |
| 0:38.3 | It normally collects in and out of the Elizabeth line. It's the last remaining diesel train |
| 0:44.3 | that operates entirely in London. And we're using the line to test some new technology. We've taken a |
| 0:51.3 | old London underground district line train and we fitted it with batteries |
| 0:57.0 | and we've also fitted the track at West Ealing with fast charging equipment. |
| 1:02.0 | And our intention is to operate this train up and down the branch line with battery power. |
| 1:10.0 | But then when the train gets to the end of the |
| 1:12.6 | line it will charge the batteries top up the battery every half an hour in its |
| 1:18.4 | turnaround time to keep the batteries sufficiently charged to have the train out |
| 1:23.8 | all day and it will run on electric power even though this is not an electrified railway. |
| 1:29.4 | So I think it's exciting to have this technology in use. Of course our customers want to be able |
| 1:36.2 | to travel on the train knowing that it's environmentally friendly, that we're not pumping dirty diesel |
| 1:42.1 | emissions into the air. And I think this trial, if it's successful and we think it will be, |
| 1:47.4 | will show people that that's possible. |
| 1:49.6 | And then, Simon, we'd like to take this technology and roll it out on other branch lines. |
| 1:54.5 | In GWR, we have more branch lines than anyone else. |
