Now let's go back to Atlanta, Georgia, on March 11, 2005.

At 8.45 a.m., sheriff's deputy Cynthia Hall escorted 33-year-old Brian Nichols out of his holding cell at the Fulton County Courthouse.

She'd been tasked with bringing the defendant down to the courtroom for another day of trial.

It wasn't the first time Nichols had been tried for raping his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint.

The first attempt ended in a mistrial, but the prosecutor went after him again.

Nichols knew the second time wasn't leaning in his favor. He'd told others in the courthouse that

he wasn't going to go lying down, and Nichols planned to keep his word.

Downstairs, Deputy Hall brought Nichols to a holding area where he could change into civilian

clothes for court. After she unlocked one of his handcuffs, Nichols saw an opportunity. In the few

seconds his hands were free, he attacked.

They fought for about three minutes before Nichols overpowered Deputy Hall.

He hit the officer hard in the face and took her pistol before quickly leaving the scene.

Nichols then walked through the courthouse towards the man presiding over his case, Judge

Roland Barnes.
