Now let's go back to March 1st, 1989, to the town of Glen Ridge, New Jersey.

Late on a Wednesday afternoon, a 17-year-old girl, whose name has never been disclosed in press coverage, told her parents that she was going to the park to shoot hoops on the basketball court.

They were uneasy about letting her go out alone because she was a teen with an intellectual disability. But she could take care of herself.

She was a multi-sport athlete, a member of the softball and basketball teams.

Her parents believed that their town, the affluent suburb of Glenridge, was safe.

So they let their daughter head out that afternoon
