My girlfriend and I were left in charge of running a restaurant when we were traveling

as volunteers.

This is the thing that you encounter often when you're backpacking.

Pretty much all the hostels in tourism related companies have volunteers running some aspect

of it.

Usually it's the customer facing positions like waiters, greeters, answering phones

in English, if you're in a country with not many people who speak it.

Working in a foreign country is illegal without a visa, so that's why they call those volunteers.

We had been staying at the owner's hotel for about two weeks but had plans of longer

travel time while we explore the area and while talking with the owner one morning, taking

care of the place came up in conversation and that's how it all started.

The hotel itself was old and the restaurant was made on the driveway of the place by removing

the parking spaces and building walls of metal slabs and a ceiling of the same material.

It had a large window facing the sidewalk.

The place ended up looking nice due to the many drapes and Arabic theme that I had.

It looked like a nice outdoorsy area to have dinner, since it would only be open in the

evening.

The food tasted great, but the employees had some serious issues with the owner.

He had yelled at several of them over trivial cooking mistakes.

The owner being such a perfectionist would abuse his power and eventually the main waiters

quit, then the kitchen assistants quit, leaving only the chef and two volunteer waiters, which

were my girlfriend and myself.
