For the next three weeks, we're going to be exploring food through the lens of politics, culture, and diaspora.

And this first week's episode is about Eid al-Adha in the way that Muslims consume meat.

What's interesting to me that in both of those cases, what we're talking about is how the animal died.

What you're not asking is how did this animal live?

Right.

If you see something, you better, you better say something.

So this past week was Idol Adha.

It is the festival of the sacrifice,

one of the most important religious celebrations for Muslims around the world,

where it commemorates Abraham's sacrifice of his son and Muslims slaughter a lamb or goat or cow in order to give the food to the needy, into family, and to relatives.

To me, it opened up a lot of questions about meat because I think meat is like a really interesting place in which Muslims intersect with the way food cultures exist in America and around the world.

There's one person that I had talked to in the past that really opened up my mind about the way we talk about these things.

His name is Nuri Friedlander. He's a scholar on animals and slaughter.

But before we get into my conversation with Nouri, I really wanted to have a look inside what it's like at a farm on Ida Lodha.

And we reached out to halal pastures.

Halal pastures does grass fed, organic, Thayib meat.

And they also hold an annual Edeladha celebration where they invite families to come on the farm, see how they've raised

the animals, slaughter them, and package them up to give to charity.
