The South Carolina man accused of holding four vulnerable adults in his basement for years and spending their money

is now charged with murder in connection with the deaths of one of his alleged captives.

Lancaster police announced that Donnie Ray Birchfield Jr. is charged with murder in the death of 49-year-old Shirley Arnsdorf.

The 35-year-old is also charged with first-degree sexual conduct. Back in July, police were called to the Birchfield home and found Arndstaff laying on the floor unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police learned Birchfield was allegedly the sole caregiver to Arnsdorf and her husband, found evidence of physical abuse and that other people were being held against their will there,

including two women he was allegedly romantically involved with, one since 2015.

Police say Birchfield controlled their eating, bathroom habits and communications,

and spent their money at Walmart and on his own debts.

He's being held without bond.
