Summary

Mal Evans

Mal Evans had a front-row seat to the entire Beatles experience, and the Beatles were happy to have him there.

Whether it was as an extra in A Hard Day’s Night or co-writing a song on the Ringo album, he remains an indelible part of their landscape. Contains anvils.

Live on tape from Dublin & Belfast, it’s Nothing Is Real.

My name is Jason Carty.

My name is Stephen Cockcroft.

And we're live on tape from Dublin and Belfast.

One of the fascinating things about the Beatles is how places and events and people just become interesting purely by being part of the Beatle universe.

0:33.3

One of these people is Malcolm Evans, known as Mal Evans, their road manager, or roadie from

0:38.8

1963 onwards, who has had a resurgence of interest since his prominent appearance in Peter

0:44.5

Jackson's Get Back. And it is true about the Beatles that we're interested in him because he's

0:50.0

attached to the Beatles. I was picking my brains last night about any other famous road manager

0:55.4

and I was coming up wanting. Do you have any other famous road managers? Road managers?

1:02.1

No. No, not really. Not off the top of my head. It's a bit like Derek Taylor. It is a bit like

1:08.5

Derek Taylor and yeah, big bands, you know, some of the big

1:11.0

bands you get to know their managers, you know, your Peter Grants and your Paul McGuinness and all that

1:14.4

kind of stuff. And I can think of one famous roadie road manager who was Noel Galaher, but he's

1:20.0

not famous because he was a road manager. He just was a road manager in a previous life. But this is the magic of the Beatles that we have Mal to think about.

1:28.0

And I think for years, I think you would agree that for people like myself and yourself,

1:32.7

Mal was this kind of fun peripheral person that we knew about.

1:36.6

But he has really come to life in the last couple of years.

1:39.2

Yes. And I think you're right. It is the get-back movie in particular.

1:43.1

You know, he was there in the background.

1:44.9

You know, he pops up in films. You see him in the background of photographs, particularly in the early days.
