Our first returning guest, Sarah Hurwitz, rejoins Jonah to discuss her powerful new book As a Jew: Reclaiming Our Story from Those Who Blame, Shame, and Try to Erase Us — a work as essential as it is uplifting in a post–October 7th world. In this deeply personal and thought-provoking conversation, Sarah reflects on how education can be a true source of empowerment and shares insights from her own evolving Jewish journey. Drawing from years of research and her current pursuit of the rabbinate, she offers a rich, nuanced perspective on what it means to live — and lead — as a Jew today.

For Sarah, Judaism isn’t about any single expression — not just Israel, Hebrew, activism, or observance — but the harmony of all these threads woven together with curiosity, study and connection to the sacred wisdom of our ancient tradition. This episode feels like stepping into a vibrant, welcoming congregation — full of learning, laughter, and meaning. Don’t miss this inspiring and deeply grounding conversation on Being Jewish with Jonah Platt.

Shalom, Kavarim, Banot, and welcome to another very special episode of the world's number one Jewish podcast.

I have to ask for a small favor.

As an independent show, we don't have a massive marketing machine behind us.

0:14.6

Our growth is purely organic, fueled by dedicated viewers and listeners like you.

So if you would be so kind, please take 30 seconds,

head over to Apple Podcasts and Spotify, find this show, and leave me a five-star rating and a short

written review. I love seeing all of your thoughtful and generous feedback. Some of it has even

0:35.0

made it onto the show and may again. And as of this recording,

0:38.7

we are just eight ratings away from hitting 500 on Apple. Crossing that threshold would be a huge

0:44.3

milestone for us. It's a small mitzv on your part, but it really is the fuel that allows us to

keep these amazing conversations going. So thank you in advance. Unless you don't leave a rating,

in which case you're a butthead. Right now, I'm going to introduce a single idea. I'm going

1:01.2

to explain why that idea is important, and then I'm going to apply this idea to myself, to my Jewish,

Israel, and political advocacy, specifically, and in doing so, hopefully open a door to those of you

seeing this who may assume we share no common ground on those topics, when I believe, in fact, we do.

First, the idea. To achieve clearly understood communication in our relationships, personal, professional,

casual, romantic, online, IRL, every level of life,

1:29.3

it is critical that we remind ourselves to make the implicit explicit. That's the idea.

1:35.7

Whatever we assume to be obvious, be it our emotional state, the purpose of an event,

1:40.4

or the location of a stapler, we must teach ourselves to assume that it actually is not

1:46.2

and therefore must be stated out loud if we are to be understood. Why is this important to do?

1:52.3

Because the literal opposite is true. What is most obvious to us is generally not obvious to other
