Summary

Part 1: Touch the sky. Before becoming a cultural lightning rod, Kanye West was a self-confident teenager, handing out mixtapes on the South and West sides of Chicago. In the first episode of our two-part podcast series, we track Kanye’s meteoric rise from uncredited producer to headlining star. Making tells the story of a different, iconic figure every episode. Hey, what's up guys? I want to have a chat with you before we get into it. What we try

0:04.3

to do here on making is deliver you the story of an icon's rise to fame for all their

0:09.7

good and bad. But this figure is particularly tricky. Kanye West or Ye as he goes by now

0:19.3

means so many different things to different people. To some, he's a hip-hop hero. To others,

0:26.1

he's a divisive symbol of hate. To a lot, he's both. About a year ago, we decided to produce

0:32.7

a show on Ye. Then, just a few months later, his extremism turned into violent hate speech.

0:40.6

And we shelved it. We went back and forth on whether to put it out there. On one hand,

0:45.3

we don't want to give a platform to Ye's hate. And on the other hand, the more we researched,

0:50.1

the more his story became about a lot of deeper, destructive parts of our culture. And

0:55.4

for what it's worth, I think those are parts that we need to talk about. So if anything,

1:00.6

hopefully, these two episodes can do that. Hopefully, they can provide guide rails to

1:05.9

digest Ye and learn from his downfall. Well, anyway, that's a peek behind the curtain.

1:11.8

So here it is. The making and unmaking of Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West.

1:18.9

Roll the tape.

1:26.1

Talent that hasn't been seen in hip hop ever before.

1:29.5

You can't retire and create a genius man. You retire Steve Jobs.

1:32.9

No figuring all of music history as controversial.

1:36.1

And I can't listen to him anymore.

1:37.5

One of the greatest artists of our age.

1:39.4

I am the number one most impactful artist of our generation.
